First, a small Sukhoi Superjet 100 with 50 passengers crashed into a hillside in Indonesia, killing all aboard:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/10\/world\/asia\/russian-aircraft-vanishes-from-radar-during-promotional-flight.html\" title=\"New Russian Aircraft Crashes During a Promotional Flight in Indonesia\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then two different crashes in Africa occurred in the last day or so.  Of particular interest was this one in Nigeria:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/worldnews.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2012\/06\/03\/12034499-153-people-feared-dead-in-nigerian-plane-crash?lite\" title=\"153 People Feared Dead in Nigerian Plane Crash\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Curious about the topic, I looked into recent airplane accidents at <a href=\"http:\/\/planecrashinfo.com\/recent.htm\" title=\"planecrashinfo.com\"><\/a>. What I found was interesting, but not unexpected. At first glance, I could see I could easily divide up the crashes into the following categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Helicopter\/Military<\/li>\n<li>Private aircraft up to small corporate jets<\/li>\n<li>Commercial aircraft<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What I found interesting here was that in the last group, only one occurred in a first world country. Whenever I hear people argue that government regulation is strangling business, this is the kind of thing that comes to mind. Our aircraft stay in the air, our buildings don&#8217;t routinely collapse, and we are rarely poisoned by our food.
